SFLQT CH 15

Hope everyone’s Chinese New Year has been going well.

I worry about Corona virus and it sucks that a lot of people must have had their new years affected by it. Kobe, big Chinatown fire in NYC, etc. I feel like there’s been a lot of bad news floating around. Need some good luck for the New Year!

I’m also a little obsessed with the new 3L3W drama with Dijun and Bai Fengjiu. I read the Pillow Book and felt it would be harder to adapt compared to Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, especially since they included them as a minor storyline in the first drama. They wind up doing a soft reset of the story so that they can follow the book more closely, which I am happy about. I love that most of the actors for the characters returned though I wish the Phoenix, Zhe Yan retained the same original actor. I’m going to wait for a few episodes to build up before I binge on Youtube, which I don’t even have time to watch! Anyway, rambling on too long for this topic.

I’m torn between not translating the author’s note and continue doing so. I feel that they add a lot of background to the intent of the story but they can suck up a lot of my time and prevent me from translating/editing as well… Please fill out my poll to help me decide!

Thank you all for your continued support!

Author’s Note:

Colleagues: Shen Wang Dogecoin. ← ←.

TL: Not sure if I translated that right but that seems to be the case. Dogecoin is crytocurrency btw. I didn’t really understand this author note as well. Then the rest of her note seems to be about her archives and red pockets or what not, she was joking by writing a wanted/missing poster for her archive…

Translator’s Notes:

It’s a bit worrying with the blood… I’m not sure what to think of it.. The language in the text doesn’t make it clear if it’s Su Nuo’s or Lin Zhi’s blood. I somehow suspect that it’s Lin Zhi because it seemed like she tried to hide it from Su Nuo.

I can’t believe Su Nuo got kidnapped before, all for that dang Shen Wang. How would a teenager even being to think of that? This is sort of in contrast to her attitude towards her little twin brothers because they should be around the same age as the kidnapper then but she thinks of them as little kids. She also remarked that little kids can’t really be that bad when she has experienced proof to the contrary!

He even said to go ahead and kill her?! He thought it was a joke I guess but still that’s too far!

Interesting in terms of translations, he told the kidnapper to rip up the ticket 撕票 since if ransom negotiations aren’t to the abductor’s liking, the ultimate threat would be carried out. This is something understood innately in Chinese in the context of abductions and ransoms.

Don’t get why the kidnapping incident didn’t cause her to give up on Shen Wang, let alone the rejected engagement (Shen Wang comments she was still trying to get in his good graces even after)! Su Nuo back then really was blind but at least she obviously grew from then. I appreciate that the author gives us an actual reason for Su Nuo’s crazy obsessive behavior though. Many times, authors don’t give us that backstory and we just have to accept that some people are just crazy jealous or petty for no reason.

I also don’t get why Shen Wang had no guilt whatsoever towards this incident, she frigging got stabbed right in front of him! I mean, He did feel a bit guilty for ditching her at the side of the road??? It’s kind of odd on this point, maybe they will elaborate? BTW, kabedon is a common thing in Asian rom-coms, especially idol drama or anime.

Su Nuo is racking up the scars though! Wrist, back… That’s in contrast to usual Chinese female protagonists with their perfect “jade” white skins.

Also about gaming, in regards to the equipment glowing and sparkling, a lot of the better higher-end gear is not just better designed but will usually have a lot of special effects. Chinese MMOs tend to be more grind-y/farm-y than American MMOs and also many Chinese MMOs started the trend, if I am not mistaken, of being able to buy high end gear. You also see this to some extent in gatcha games, where there is a division between free to play gamers (F2P) or people that sink a lot of money into the game (whales, etc) pr they buy ready made accounts from other players that built it up.

Paladin gear from WoW
Perfect World MMO players

I also think that Love One Sword Length has been a great in game friend so far. My husband always said that people are their true selves in game and I find that has mostly held true. People can’t hide their true characteristics such as if they are selfish, nice, helpful, mean, condescending, etc.

I suspect that Ling Ling Xi will give Su Nuo a hard time as it’s implied she is a female too and also healers will generally have to compete for the same gear or slot since it’s usually only 1 tank, 1 healer, rest dps in a group. It’s much easier to play DPS so many more players are dps vs tanks or healers. Generally more healers are needed compared to a tank as even in big groups/raids, only 2-3 tanks are needed versus maybe 5-7 healers. So in a way, healers/tanks are important in groups as they are rarer so will tend to be taken care of more.

Chinese internet slang is also pretty involved. There are acronyms and numerical shortcuts. English internet slang pretty much seems to revolve around acronyms only. Chinese internet slang is super complicated to explain sometimes! There’s a lot of it randomly peppered through out this chapter actually.

I also forgot to explain the meaning of Liu Jinjin’s (劉今今) name. His surname Liu is common Chinese surname but translates into kill, whereas his name is Jinjin and means today or now. So it translates to kill now! hahah!

As for some of the newer characters, most of the in game names before this point could be directly or simply translated but not these two, Miechenshi and Ling Ling Xi.

Miechenshi (灭尘世) seems to translate into exterminate Life’s Dust with a Buddhist/Taoist connotation to this name. So it mean to get rid of life’s worldly matters? The chen is the same type of dust or dirt that Su Nuo has been described to rise above. So I would say as above worldly matters, ethereal? It’s a bit of a violent/strong name with a hint of Dao cultivation, pretty appropriate for a xianxia game.

Ling Ling Xi (凌凌熙) seems to be a seriously arrogant user name as it generally means Excellence Rising High. I guess they are a whale as they seem to spend real money to have a good set of gear so being high caliber player appears to be important to them. I feel like this player is a girl for some reason. The name seems pretty feminine and healers tend to be females.

Mouth DoDoDoDo You Say (你说嘴巴嘟嘟嘟嘟) may seem to translate well but I think it also references a song or meme, I couldn’t really figure it out. When I searched for this, it kept turning up bilibili videos so maybe it was part of a challenge that went viral on the internet. It also reminds me of that Black Pink song

Also the under eye bags, apparently that is an Asian trend that may have originated with the hallyu wave called Aegyo sal and Lying silkworm (卧蚕) for the Chinese.

Left with silkworm eyebags, right without

Wow, this wound up being long! Pardon my rambling!

  1. I don’t have a Patreon account, but were I you, I would just skim over the author’s note and only translate it if you find it interesting or relevant! Or even just translate bits and pieces of it. I think of it as optional material.

  3. The dad did have a moment where he was about to tell Su Nuo why they called her home. I guess her mom has a terminal illness that they’re too poor to treat?

    Thank you for the chapter!
